The Effect of Illness Perceptions on Caregiving Appraisal of the Guardian of the Elderly with Disabilities

Abstract

Objective : The purpose of this study is to examine how the guardian's illness perceptions in charge of caring for the elderly with disabilities affects the caregiving appraisal through questionnaire analysis and to provide basic data on the education program for the elderly with disabilities. Methods : From december 2022 to february 2023, the SPSS WIN 21.0 program was used for 172 guardians of the elderly with disabilities using facilities for the elderly with disabilities, setting independent variables as illness perceptions, dependent variables as care evaluation, and control variables as general characteristics of the elderly with disabilities. Resutls : First, there was a significant difference in the caregiving appraisal of guardians of the elderly with disabilities. Second, in the correlation analysis between illness perception and caregiving appraisal of guardians of the elderly with disabilities, there was a static correlation in all areas except for the burden of awareness and illness perceptions. Third, it showed that illness perceptions of disabled elderly guardians had effect caregiving appraisal on the degree and duration of disability, age of guardians and economic level of disabled elderly guardians, cognitive illness perceptions, and emotional illness perceptions. Conclusion : The guardian's care of the elderly with disabilities is influenced by many factors and has a negative experience. However, through the illness perceptions of the guardian, basic data were provided to find ways to minimize negative experiences and maximize positive effects, and the need for healing and educational programs for guardians of the elderly with disabilities was found.
