Effects of Life Skills Occupational Therapy in Community Dwelling Chronic Schizophrenia Patients

Abstract
Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Life skills occupational therapy program on the improvement of psychotic symptoms, functional performance, social functions, and performance capacity of daily activities in chronic schizophrenia patients. Methods : It was conducted on 19 patients registered at the Mental Health Welfare Center. The program applied to the study group was developed overseas and was modified and supplemented according to the domestic situation and was conducted once a week for 75 minutes, a total of 16 times. Results : As a result of comparing before and after the program, the study group showed a significant effect on psychotic symptoms, functional performance, social functions, and activities of daily living. Control group was a significant difference in some part of social functions, but there were no significant differences in other areas. When comparing the changes between the groups after the program, there were significant differences in positive symptoms and overall symptoms, which are subtypes of psychotic symptoms. Conclusion : In this study, it was confirmed that there was a positive effect on symptom improvement and performance capacity of daily activities as a result of applying Life skills occupational therapy program to patients with chronic schizophrenia living in the community.
