Objective : The purpose of this study was to verify the effect of sleep quality on activity participation in the elderly living in the community. Methods : This study was conducted on 200 elderly people using welfare institutions located in Jeollabuk-do from August 21 to September 29, 2019. Data collection was performed using the Korean version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI-K) and the Korean-Activity Card Sort (K-ACS). The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, independent t-test, Pearson correlation, and simple linear regression analysis. Results : The group with high quality of sleep showed significantly higher participation in instrumental activities, social activities and leisure activities than the group with low quality of sleep (p<.001). The quality of sleep was significantly correlated with instrumental activities, social activities and leisure activities (p<.01). The quality of sleep significantly affected the instrumental activities (R2=.224), social activities (R2=.142) and leisure activities (R2=.227) (p<.001). Conclusion : The quality of sleep needs to be approaches to promote the participation of elderly people living in the community, and development of an intervention program will be needed to improve quality of sleep.

Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the awareness of job task importance and performance of occupational therapists in the community care system for the elderly. Methods : We conducted an online questionnaire survey of 152 occupational therapists nationwide from May 31, to June 24, 2019. General characteristics and institutional awareness, role and performance awareness were analyzed by descriptive statistics. One way ANOVA were conducted to compare the differences of working days, working places, and the field of work. Results : The recognition of the community care system for the elderly was low at 2.93 ± 1.0 but the importance of the community care system was 3.94 ± 0.7 and the importance of the occupational therapist in the system was 4.34 ± 0.7. Fall prevention (4.63 ± 0.7) was the most important in occupational therapist's jobs, and performance was high in instrumental activity daily living training (3.94 ± 0.8) and physical function training (3.94 ± 0.8). Conclusion : This study can be presented as basic data on job task importance and performance awareness of occupational therapists in the elderly community care system. In addition, it is expected to be used as basic data for establishing the role of occupational therapist in the elderly community care system.

Objective : This study was designed to identify the effects on the time usage and quality of life of seniors with stroke by applying lifestyle redesign programs on the theoretical basis of the Occupational Balance. Method : A pretest-posttest control group design was conducted for a total of 40 stroke elderly people living in nursing homes(20 experimental and 20 control groups). Prior assessment was conducted for two weeks before the application of the lifestyle redesign program. For the next 10 weeks, the lifestyle redesign program was applied seven times a week. After that, a week of post-evaluation was conducted. The time usage for the subjects was analyzed by Life Time Survey Table of the National Statistical Office(2009) and life quality for them was analyzed by World Health Organization Quality of Life-BRIEF (WHOQOL-BRIEF). Result : The comparison of time usage before and after application of the program demonstrated that for the experimental group, rest and sleep(t=-4.89, p<.001), and leisure(t=-4.67, p<.00b1) showed significant differences. In addition, intergroup comparison results showed that there were also significant differences in rest and sleep(t=-2.24, p<.01) and leisure(t=3.57, p<.01). The comparison of life quality showed a significant difference between two groups(t=6.80, p<.001). If you look at the sub-area of quality of life, a significant difference was identified in physical health(t=6.08, p<.001), psychological health(t=5.21, p<.001), living environment area(t=3.60, p<.01). Conclusion : Lifestyle redesign program actually reduced the time usage for rest and sleep for elderly with stroke living in nursing homes, and increased the time for participating in leisure life resulting in improved quality of life.

Objective : The purpose of this study is to identify time management among college students and provide them with a basic resource for planning and educating them on efficient time management methods for improving the quality of life of all clients who receive occupational therapy services, including non-disabled people. Methods : This study is a survey of four-year university students using the questionnaire to know the relationship between structured time usage and quality of life. A total of 142 questions, excluding eight missing questionnaires, was compared and analyzed with using the general characteristics, time structure questionnaires (time structure questionnaires) and World Health Organization (WHOQOL-BREF). Results : The results of this study showed that there was a significant correlation between quality of life and structured time management, and between the sub-items of structured time management; sense of purpose, structured daily life, persistence, past direction and sleep intensity. Also, factors that affect the quality of life were sleep (β=.214), structured daily life (β=.203), a sense of purpose(β=.343), and past direction(β=.244) appeared in order. Conclusion : In the case of university student who is working within structured time, there were difficulties in showing satisfactory quality of life. These factors of poor quality of life were analyzed to affect structured daily life, sense of purpose, past direction, and sleep level.

Objective : The purpose of this study is to measure the level of activity possessed by the daily activities of the elderly. In addition, we attempted to compare the differences in the categories of daily activities. Methods : We used K-ACS to evaluate 30 older people who engaged in economic activity living in community, 30 older people who did not have economic activity living in community, and 30 older people living in facility. We compared the level of activity retention. Results : There was a significant difference of level of activity retention according to the daily activity category of the subjects(p <.001). There was a difference in the instrumental activities according to the category of each activity, while the three groups showed similar patterns in leisure activities and social activities. In particular, all three groups were most likely to rest and watch television in the leisure activities, so the leisure activities of the elderly in Korea were very limited. Among the general characteristics, it was analyzed that there was a correlation between the activity, the marital status, the religion and the cognitive level. Conclusion : According to the daily activities category of the elderly, there was a difference in level of activity retention and the characteristics of daily activities correlated with the activities of the elderly. This suggests that it may be a basic data for establishing a client - centered intervention plan by considering the characteristics affecting daily living and level of activity retention of the elderly in the occupational therapy.

Objective : The purpose of this technical research is to determine decline of episodic memory by normal aging focucing on object, spatial location, and temporal order memory. Methods : We allocated seventy-seven of healthy adults from twenty to eighty years old, and performed computer-based cognitive tasks which were consisted of the object, spatial location, and temporal order memory. We used OpenSesame(OpenSesame Inc, OR), put ten pictures people normally see in their daily life, and evaluated those aspects through asking the objects types, object spatial locations, and picture temporal orders from 10 sheets of the picture. Results : Object and spatial location memory were not affected by normal aging whereas, temporal order memory significantly decreased with normal aging. Specifically, temporal order memory for in their age of forty was significantly decreased compared with their age of twenty and object memory at their age of eighty was relatively high compared to spatial location and temporal order memory. We found out that temporal order memory worse fastest and object memory lasted longest. Conclusion : In this study, we confirmed characteristics of declines of episodic memory consisting of object, spatial location, and temporal order memory. Notably, we could specifically identify declines of spatial location and temporal order memory with normal aging previous studies investigated on a limited basis using conventional neuropsychological assessments. These findings would be helpful to screen impairment in episodic memory by normal aging and provide an evidence that cognitive intervention for healthy older adults needs to include spatial and temporal aspect of memory.

Objective : The purpose of this study is to repeatedly conduct task-oriented training in scopolamine-induced dementia rats and as a result observe changes in the content of acetylcholine, a marker of cognitive function and central nervous system plasticity, to identify the improvement effect of dementia. Methods : It consisted of two groups. One group I was that did not perform task-oriented training in scopolamine-induced dementia rats and the other group II was that performed task-oriented training. Task-oriented training involved stretching, grasping and moving arms and walking obstacles on the legs. We performed a quantified passive avoidance test in the measurement of memory for cognitive function and compared the change in the content of acetylcholine for the plasticity of the central nervous system. Results : The results of the study are as follows: First, there was a significant improvement in cognitive function since the 4th days after task-oriented training of scopolamine-induced dementia rats(.00). Second, task-oriented training applied to scopolamine-induced dementia rats showed a significant increase in acetylcholine content. Conclusion : In this study, task-oriented training, which is often performed on senile dementia patients during occupational therapy intervention, was scientifically demonstrated in scopolamine-induced dementia rats by enhancement of cognitive function through memory improvement and increase in the content of acetylcholine confirming central nervous system plasticity.

Objective : The aim of this study was to evaluate the current knowledge regarding constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) and its application in clinical practice by physiatrists and therapists in pediatric rehabilitation area in Korea. Methods : Online survey via E-mails was sent to a total of 510 members (204 physiatrists and 306 therapists) of the Korean Society of Pediatric Rehabilitation and Developmental Medicine (KSPRDM). Results : The response rate was 35.1% (179 of 510). A total of 179 questionnaires was completed by 39 physiatrists, 89 physiotherapists, 48 occupational therapists, and 3 speech therapists. 45.8% of responders had worked over 6 years in the pediatric rehabilitation setting and a total of 58.1% (n=104) of the sample had used CIMT. The main limitations of clinically applying CIMT included limited staff and inappropriate clinical setting (35.1%, n=61), lack of understanding (19.5%, n=34), and developmental issues of function on the unaffected side (13.8%, n=24). The cooperation of patients (77.6%, n=76), cognitive/behavioral factors (42.9%, n=42), and cooperation of caregivers (25.5%, n=25) were the 3 major concerns that could be limitations with CIMT. Conclusions : Although considerable evidence supports the use of CIMT, many of physiatrist and therapists do not apply this method in practice. The improvement of limitations is necessary for wide use of CIMT in clinical practice in Korea.

Objective : The purpose of this study was to develop an assessment tool to measure Korean occupational balance. Methods : From March 2017 to July 2019, preliminary questionnaire was prepared through analysis of previous research and expert focus meeting, and preliminary questions were selected through the Delphi survey. In order to verify the validity of the items, Rash analysis was conducted to analyze the persons and items fitness, the distribution of item difficulty, separation reliability, and the appropriateness of the rating scale. Results : Among 141 subjects, 9 (6.38%) in time use and 11 (7.80%) in the occupation area were inappropriate subjects. As a result of analyzing the appropriateness of the items except for the inappropriate subjects, the 3 items were judged as ineligible items, but 1 item of the occupation characteristics was finally deleted based on the theoretical and clinical grounds. In the analysis of the scale, 4 points were more appropriate than the 5 point scale, and the separation reliability was .86～.94. Finally, 3 categories (time use, occupation area, occupation characteristics) and 18 items were selected. Conclusion : The occupational balance assessment tool was selected three categories and 18 questions finally, three categories and 18 questions, and was developed on a four-point Likert scale. Further research needs to prove the concurrent validity of the K-OBA and to analyze the factors that influence the occupational balance.
